I have to say that the 170mw optnext single mode is the best diode I've used period. 638nm The next best is their 642nm diode. perfect blend of power beam size and color balance. They over drive to 200mw as well. I have been running four like that for over two years with no blow outs. The beam is slightly larger than the 110mw diode but the features make it worth it. It's 5.6mm though which I actual like as my solder skills suck.
Use a 2x or 3x expander for smaller beam if needed. Beam is full of shit so a spatial is helpful. One diode balances well with the 120mw green but you need to use a fat 5.6 445nm diode to balance those. Again beam telescopes. Let the scanner mirror clip the edges.
my two cents forget the 110mw diode.

no dont forget the 110mw 638 diode, cos its case isolated where as the 642nm has the pin connected to the case.
the 110mw 638nm didoe is £20, its got a great single mode beam, its 5.6mm, the case is isolated. ticks many boxes, all be it, its not as powerful as others

ML520G54 - 638nm@25C, isolated case, Ф5.6mm case, 110mW nominal power, $34(ebay)
HL63133GD - 638nm@25C, isolated case, Ф5.6mm case, 170mW nominal power, $89(ebay)
HL63603TG - 638nm@25C, isolated case, Ф3.8mm case, 120mW nominal power, $24(ebay)
outstanding questions - the beam quality of each diode, overloading possibility, etc...

not interesting in over driving, but as each is single mode the beam spec will be the best you can get - fact

First of all I would like to test Dave's and Rochester's 2mmFL lens with these diodes in array
