No they cannot. These printer cables have no actual DAC chips in them.
A thing that does look like this is the RIYA which does work.
The cheapest alternative to an actual laser dac is a 5.1/7.1 external USB sound card with a correction amp or a LPT DAC (latter is very limited and not supported by the majority of software anymore)
