Cool Analog Laser Watch on building?

    Hi,

I got a cool project for a customer,
to project a analog watch on a wall on a building,
    here in Denmark(Scandinavia/North Europe)

The watch diameter will be about 6 meters.

Got a 100mW Green Laser pointer,
will that be enough power, in the half dark/night time?
(How much will a multi color scanner cost?)

    What HW to buy 10k, 15k, 30k, 40k etc?
    (Something good on eBay/Galvos ?)

    I got a good understanding off electronic+software programmeing+DIY,
so can tweak things a little..

And what software is good for the project + cheap/open source/FW?

A any script based laser software out there?

As i know now you interface with PC with
ILDA connector or DMX - so i need another card?
(What about USB2.0 FireWire or Ethernet?)

This is a new a exciting field for me

    btw.
Also my first post on PL forums :-)

    Wellcome Johannes!
Lasers is facinating Can do cool things with it.

You can get the EasyLase USB interface.
    http://www.jmlaser.com/products_engl..._kurzinfo.html
    also the MambaBlack software:
    http://www.jmlaser.com/software_engl...mba_black.html

I know there is a analog watch in the LDS software
    http://laserdesignstudio.de/
I have used it sometimes in my shows.
It is fun to project it on a wall

As scanners, I will recommend the DT40 Pro scanners. jian725 in this forum made them and his price is also nice.
550usd incl shipping. (+ any paypal fees)

You will get more good answers in here
    Again, wellcome to PL

I think a laserpointer, especially a high-power-green one, is about the worst laser to start with. The optical power should be enough. But if you want to project a clock for days/years on end, in an outdoor application, laser and galvo's should be of the best quality you can afford.

Pointers have no blanking and their thermal design is intended for anything but continuous operation.

Concerning the galvo's : Run them at the lowest speed possible to prevent wear and tear.

    Hi Cruch and bart

    Thanks for the good welcoming

    >EasyLase USB interface + DT40 Pro
Looks good - will definality take a clooser look at it

    >It is fun to project it on a wall
    Do you have some pictures/videoes?
Could be really good to see

Can the mambo software do the real time analog watch?,
by scripting? and what is the price?

And can you modify the laser watch in the LDS sw?

No good open source / freeware exist for laser shows, who can do the trick?

    >Run galvo at low speed.
How fast can i run galvo without loosing too much details on clock?

    >in an outdoor application
There is a bulding on the other side, where the pc + laser will be,
did notice that below 10C celsius the laser will dim alot.

Not sure it will run 365 days a year.

    >Pointers have no blanking
Can't i modify the circuit?, so it can be blanked quick(MOS-FET maybe)?
    Its a Newwish laser pointer.

I just buy a new one, if they died, they are pretty cheap..
(Maybe a good green is also cheap?)

    Thanks for your tips

Hope i did not ask too much - got alot of questions

If this is to be done professionally, I would recommend having hot spares
available. If you budget can handle a couple CT6800's then that'd be what I'd do (mainly because those are proven in the track) but if you can only afford a single set of 6800's, then I'd recommend getting a set of dt-40's for the redundancy. I would also go redundant on laser controllers, but as they're not moving, they're less likely to fail. FYI a CT6800 or 6215 isn't a magic wand agains't problems, I've have to RMA quite a few CT's in service. It's just easy to tell if they're having problems because their "correct" behaviour is well known.

Pointers are not rated for continuous use and will fail pretty quickly.
