Yeah, all these lasers burn great thru black rubberized material. I'd like to see it burn thru 1/2" polished aluminum

Or even a moving target , no criminals are going to sit still and wait for 30 seconds while some laser burns a hole in a boat

Haven't you seen what you can do with a chinese pettawatt green laser pointer?

These aren't new .. THEL chemical lasers have been around for a while. Also, all the "threats" are painted with a dark color to absorb the laser's radiation .. very convenient .. even the white ones have black tips if you look very closely. Good sales tactics ..

I think the Navy has the best bet of getting this to work first. They have so much electrical power available and the bulk of high power free electron lasers is not a problem for them. A 1MW QCW beam can take out many targets/second and they say they will be up there by 2020. I'll bet they're near that level now.

AFAIK there were some tests dekades ago with 'pumping' laser crystals with 'imploding' Z-pinch coils or even nuclear explosions -- but every setup lasts only once, so you'll need a bunch of them sitting all around and much more nuclear power-plants for feeding the needed energies

You have to wonder about the moral standing of the sales team that sells a weapon/defense system that only works on dark painted mat objects...
If in doubt... Give it a clout?

For those talking about the color of the objects, how many weapons are painted a color that will reflect the laser energy? Not many, if any, at all. It would be dumb to do so.

Then there is this. The C-130 was flying at 30,000 feet.
