Googling for "diy motorized camera dolly" may turn up some additional hits.

servocity has lots of good parts for things like this. They have belts, gears, motors, servos, and controllers at reasonable hobby prices. Not sure what the UK analogue to servocity is, but it'll give you an idea for what's out there:

What kind of help are you looking for? Design? Sourcing? Assembly?

Sounds like a job for T slot tubing with teflon sliders.

go to this link and click on the "fractional linear motion" link.

    Other companies offer similar.

Then get the motor and plastic chain from "SERVOCITY"

90% probability of it working if the PWM frequency is low enough. Ask the seller what the PWM baseline frequency is.
Too high and the motor just acts as a pure inductor and does not spin well.

3RPM on a 2" pulley is only 18" per minute... is that what you're shooting for?

    Andy,
    have a look here:
    http://www.telescopeshop.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d207.html
They do dual axis quartz tracking motors for £99. There's also a fully auto mount for £199. Compared to stuff by Meade, that's bloody good.
You've probably seen it already, but there's an indistructable which is based on a Meade mount similar to the one above
