I held off on Windows 8 for a very long time. I finally moved to Windows 8.1 but only after trying it out with Stardock's Start8 and ModernMix add-ins. With those, I really don't notice much difference from Windows 7 with my normal activities. It get's a little weird when I need to do some power-user stuff but otherwise it is fine. I haven't run into any applications that aren't compatible although I had to go through a special step to install the Riya driver since it isn't signed.

I have Moncha 4 installed and it works fine so you can put that on the list.

I did the add-ons and plug-ins to give me the functionality, look and feel of Windows 7 and while it looked like a duck, it didn't exactly quack like one. Like I had said in a previous post, I didn't like that they're trying to steer me to use additional apps, downloaded from the Microsoft Store to do the same things I use to do, without them. Most of these apps are optimized for touchsrceen which is horrible for use with a mouse. I also don't like being tied to a Microsoft account that is always "logged in" when I use my machine. It bugs me at times but I put up with it on my Android because I like my Android phone and I don't use it for general computing. I just find the Microsoft is trying to be more like Apple/Google and if I wanted it to be like that, I would use Apple products or Google products because, let's face it, they do it better! I use Windows because it is not Mac or Android/Chrome. VMware doesn't work well on windows 8.1 yet and that is a huge deal breaker for me.

You don't have to use the "apps". I don't use any of them. I actually forgot that I could go to the Windows Store until you mentioned. Also, you don't have to be tied to a Microsoft account that is always logged in. You can use a password like in the old days if you want.

Well, it sounds like the bulk of things run on Windows 8.1 without difficulty. I was just concerned that, as sometimes happens, there are driver issues or other "fixes" that need to be tackled. That eases my mind a little although I may still search for something with 7 loaded as it's OS.

Finally did it. Although, I've bought two computers since this original post, both with 8.1 but, not for use as a dedicated laser computer. NOW I've gotten the new show laptop last night and I can't get Moncha or Fiesta to work. Basically, it doesn't like the drivers and I don't see any new ones available on Showtacles web site.

    The error is this:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered and error while attempting to install it.

    Moncha USB Device

The hash file is not present in the specified catalog file. The file is likely corrupt or the victim of tampering.

If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit it's web site and check the support section for driver software.

    Close

That's it.... nothing. Won't install them. They are 64 bit compatible and work on Windows 7 and all the way back to 2000, XP and so forth. I sent Michal a message but, haven't gotten a response yet. I figure maybe a computer guru on here might have an idea.

I have Moncha installed on my Windows 8.1 64 bit computer. I did it a long time ago so don't remember how. I don't remember jumping through any hoops. With the Riya DAC you have to boot into safe mode or whatever it's called to install the driver but it gives a completely different error if you try to install it from a normal boot. So, I know you can do it, you just need to get it sorted out.

You could always get Windows 10 for free.

Personally, I'm sticking with 7. 8.X etc are horrible to use and too restricted in what you can do.

Like what? I haven't found anything in 8.x that I can't do in 7. I am not saying you are wrong but I my experience doesn't match your claims. There might be some drivers that don't work but that happens with every OS.
