You can't risk it, each car off the line has a specific firmware. I would try that if I had no other choice.
Its 750-1500$ to license the firmware off GM for a home user. I checked. You can buy it, but only because the California Supreme Court ruled against GM in a anti-trust suit.
Data for the car comes off a server in Detroit in some cases.

all of the software updates or downloads for any GM computers, does in fact come from a GM server, so no as far as I know, there is no way around that.
aftermarket repair shops are really limited , unless they pay large amounts of money for licensing .

And, Oh, it gets better, 30 seconds off the lot, post repair, and I get a "Master Caution". Despite being driven for an hour by their senior mechanic, it still had to be rambunctious. I turned right back around and went back.
Turns out GM has software well above the OBDII level at dealerships and he didn't clear all the old error codes he pulled up. All the way back to when the car came off the line. After two more starts software found the codes, again.
After massive apologies, and my personally witnessing the diagnostics session, it seems to be running well.
I love the turbo Cruze, but I think it needs a new home.
