Default USB gamepad resolution for Beyond

I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for on Google. Does anyone know the resolution of a regular USB HID gamepad with analog sticks? The reason I am asking is because in the APC40 thread that Stuka started, there was talk about the low resolution of MIDI being unacceptable to use for abstract controls for live manipulation in Beyond. I suspect DMX would yield similar results. MIDI being 128 steps and DMX being 256. If a gamepad has higher resolution, I would like to tear one apart and use slider pots for the X and Y axis on each stick instead of the 1/2 turn pots that are normally used in the controller. This should give 4 sliders that can be mapped to abstract attributes. If the resolution is higher than 256 steps, it might be a winner. Ideas, thoughts.... anything?

I found that Beyond abstract controls tend to have a sweet spot where you get most effect, and other areas where it doesn't do much significant for large proportions of movement. If you set limits for high and low you can focus all the resolution into a smaller area of the control

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Good point. My APC40 should be here next week. I can try that. I didn't get the console for controlling abstracts but if I could use it for that too, that would be really awesome. Thanks for the advice.

Everything you need to know there. From my quick skimming it doesn't look like they will be any better. Find the part where it talks about querying ranges.

Awww nuts, looks like 128. I may try what Norty suggested about limiting the range in Beyond. Thanks for finding that, Gary.

I still like your idea. There may be other input devices that provide more range. The USB HID interface supports it, it's just that the cheap game controllers only support 256. Probably more trouble than you would like to go to, though.
