    Default Radio Shack

Great article on the positive side of this chain and unfortunate economic status of it. I wonder how many of us on this forum would pedal our bikes to Radio Shack in our younger years to pick up electronic components for the doo-dad we were working on ? Does your projector have anything in it from the Shack ?

I still do too. They still have decent quality connectors vs. chinese junk.

Man, I'm showing my age here, but I remember going to the Radio Shack and learning how to program in basic on a TRS-80 Model IV... Used to go up there during summers and play some of those cool games on a Color Computer!!

A lot of the ICs have moved in to the drawers... you still might be able to find a 74xx something in a pinch, or a 555!

RS used to discontinue items just about the time I figured out how cool they were.

The short upside to that was that sometimes I would find a box full of RS stuff at a hamfest for like 25 cents an item.

    I have 14 of those SAD1024 ICs!

It's certainly a sign of the changing times. I remember when I was a kid, becoming a young adult meant buying a stereo system. Kinda' like buying a car. At one point in history, more than half of all stereo speakers sold in the USA were sold by RS. I never bought a pair. I was more interested in building my own speakers, and they had all the neat stuff to do that too.

Now you go in there and 90% of the store is taken up with cell phone junk.
