Ok, here it is , Unfinished and ugly and ruff alignment
But proof of concept.. Not bad for being sick with a cold and tired.
Thanks to MechEng for the quickie mounts

Nice. Wouldn't it get Arctos breathing down your neck though if you tried to sell based on that layout? Also, any chance of knowing what diodes you're using? My Rohm's were cheap, but disappointing for serious oomph.

    Hey Marconi - good work!

Suggestion - it might be easier to align if each of the diodes is originally collimated to have very fat beams - align the fat beams together to make one even fatter beam - and the pass it all through a final collimator to make it small again.

A lot easier to line up the fat beams close to each other - any gaps etc innaccuracies in your alignment will get "shrunk" when you collimate the final beam down.

Thats how arctos does it anyway....

The arctos lasers are laid out a little differently - although the concept is the same.

I thought you can only get sued for patent violation if you do an exact copy...

Depends how the patent is worded, and what a legal boff can make of that, and the money the holder has to spend, I think. I agree though, in this case it is mainly the direct copy they're concerned with. Marconi's appears very similar to half an Arctos though, complete with what appear to be larger beam widths in internal routing, and four inline emitters.

I still want to know what those diodes are. I'm wondering if they might be multimode with an unusually narrow stripe width, but they don't look like it. Unless it's very narrow. As finding a single mode that can do 658 nm or so at >200 mW has eluded all of the rest of us, unless we're willing to accept projector-lamp lifetimes in 10's of hours, regardless of what optical disk drive we get them from, and as that industry would love a single mode diode that could do CW >200 mW for thousands of hours, and clearly doesn't seem to have one yet, I think that a narrow multimode diode is the most likely contender. I think that Roithner has had some possibly useful narrow-stripe multimode diodes before, not sure though.
