Edit: @Pat: Is there a trick to remove the rod from the metal tubes?

I used two tiny pairs of channel lock pliers (smallest you can find) and put a rubber strips on the teeth of pliers, CCW open, CW tighten - hehe my "not interchangeable" comment was for jeff not you, silly.
