Why would you want to burn a poor defenceless tree...

But on a tree 100 meters away... how big would the beam be?

    Naw- I like trees
oops I re-read the post and he said it didn't burn the tree.
Although with proper collimating optics 6W might burn something..

    Hi Frank,

I like trees as well and was only terminating the Argon laser beam with no Intent to harm.
Want to see the Argon Spectra-Physics laser and some of my other toys then go to " http://www.laserlover.zoomshare.com/1.shtml " and have a look around.

    Enjoy

    Cool burning trees

Its possible to do it without a collimator. you just need a green plastic leaf and a 36,000$ laser. When L. Michael Roberts used to hold the LaserFX conferences we borrowed a SP Millenia 5 running at 7.6 watts, shot it across the hotels atrium at about 50 feet and it hit the stem of a fake leaf and a fake maple tree. plop! down goes the leaf, This was very repeatable, much to the hotel staff's anoyment. carbon based leafs are not so easy.

The next time I was able to do something like that was a brand new 164 argon @ 6W aimed at a wallpapered club wall 90 feet away, the club owner was not amused either. So congrats on beating my two records.

"I want such laser too!! I presume the 808 nm pump must be more than 10 Watts?"

Aaaaaa.... LOL I never ROTFL so hard in my life! 808nm....my dear friend it's 1064nm and Lithium Niobate crystal...they get 2nd harmonic from it.
1064 divided by 2 to get 2nd harmonic = 532nm green. To get 1.7 green you need around 5W 1064nm IR.

I hired an Italian guy to do my wires. Now they look like spaghetti!
