Believe it or not, I first encountered the term while playing Dungeons and Dragons!
In the Monster Manual, the oldest dragons were classified as "venerable" and were generally described as "something with which you do not want to fuck..." (Old for a dragon being equal to many, MANY human lifetimes.)
Since then I've had precious few opportunities to use the word, but in this case I figured it was worth a shot!
