Laser Warning Help with Transport Canada form, Hercules GHE300XXX display

We are up in Whitehorse and trying to do a project where we set up a Hercules GHE300XXX with expansion lens ADR00HXXX to shoot a beam from the top of one building to another for about a week (during Rendezvous festival in February). We tried to do this last year but could not put together an application that would get approved.

This is the form we need to fill out for Transport Canada:

    http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Corp-Serv-Ge...number=26-0754

We have this info so far from laserglow.com that sold us the laser and provided a little help last year:

    Power (W) 0.3608 Avg
    Exposure (default) 0.25 s)
    Dia 1/e2 1.5 mm
    Divergence 1.2 mrad
    Therefore:
    Ocular MPE is 0.00255 W/cm2
    Eyewear OD 2.566 worst case
    Diffuse NHZ 6.72e-2
    Intrabeam NOHD 158 m.

Do you have any examples of a good termination plan we can use?

We are going from Gold Rush Inn in Whitehorse to Northern Vision Development on Quartz road. See google map route:

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. If you know a laser safety office (LSO) that you could put us in contact with that would also be awesome!

    Thanks!

So you have an up-expanded 800 mW pointer you wish to shine from one building to another.

One, TC's guy probably laughed at the low power. Not really enough for a consistently scattered visible beam from two buildings in Winter. Especially against the lighting in a modern city.

Two, Its an unapproved handheld in Canada.

Three, TCs form is based on FAA 7400 and the SAE G10 standard. So you need to do some math for NOHD, SZED, LFED

FAA 7400 current pdf has the guidelines and explanation for the math..

I'm a ILDA Certified LSO, but by principle I'm not going to sign an app for a taped down handheld. You'd have to show me a pretty solid mounting system and DC power supply before I'd let you go in airspace for a terminated beam on a building. As well as show me extensive approvals from building management and a written safety plan.

Even though its only 0.8 watts, I'm a stickler for the rules. Your way too close to Whitehorse International for any quick paperwork. Your beam path also parallels the runway and is right where a pilot flying a left hand approach to 32 would be hit if the beam flicks up.

I have a friend who consults in Aviation in Canada. He made a call to Ottawa, I've sent you a PM with the contact for TC Inspector for your region who handles lasers in Navigable Airspace. Please do not publish the phone number.

Laserglow lists less then 1.2 mR divergence.

The 10X BE is going to make that 0.12 mR divergence if adjusted accurately.

Initial Diameter is ~~ 1.5 mm, so 10X makes that 15 mm Diameter

Your visual correction factor for 532 nm is .88016

You need to check my math cause I'm in a hurry.

Lets go with the published approximations on the web, shall we?

    http://www.laserpointersafety.com/sa...o/safetycalcs/

    More about the math:

    safety.uchicago.edu/pp/laser/mpe_nhz.shtml

    Your NOHD is (32.8 / 0.12) * (SQR ( .5 * 800)) = 5466 feet

    Your SZED is (32.8 / 0.12) * (SQR (12.7 * 800 * 0.88016)) = 25,845 feet

Your CZED is 4.17 X SZED

Your LFZED is 10 x SZED

Convert to meters, its Canada, and I love visiting Canada ....
An Explanation of the zones is here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasers_and_aviation_safety

I can tell you that they are 1. Going to want to see your math on paper. 2. Have a very big problem with that SZED.

(Hint, increase divergence when regulators sigh...)

You'll need to locate your buildings with GPS, Make Diagrams, Show distances to local Airports and Heliports, etc...

Start with the big airport, ICAO Code is CYXY. My bet is they deny you because your within or close to the Airport Laser Free Zone.

I'm assuming your terminating the beam on the building and not scanning it. So I'm not going to calculate the slant range etc.

Its CANADA, and unlike the US, the artistic purpose of your doing this might get someone to listen to you.

A quick check with Skyzan Software showed the NOHD number to be on target.
Mid Arctic got my PM, and all is well.

If the Hercules matches the given numbers, its an impressive device when up-expanded.
