I'd definitely be in for attending.

Also interested in demo/etc mentioned in post 96

I'd also LOVE to see Projector buidling mentioned in post 112 (this would second)

Finally optical correction was mentioned in post 109 (this would be top of my list.)

So, hypothetically speaking, if we were able to put this on, how many people would be interested in spending several hours (up to half a day) in Club-SELEM learning how to use Beyond from one of the world's experts?

Would love to learn more Beyond!

The software does so much that I could see it being an issue of what material to cover... Best practices in PJ/Zone setup, live control, cue creation, abstract generation, timeline tricks n tips, Video, 3D, universe/pangoscript, internal data flow & theory.

I'm sure I missed something in the above...

Personally, I'd like to see stuff relating to live control as that's where I spend most of my time. So the first 3 on my list above...

    Great feedback guys!

OK, I'll pass this on to Justin. Looks like we have more than enough interest! I can't promise that we will be able to do this, but I'm trying my best. The guy will have to fly in from Europe, so that complicates things.

    Hank;

You are not the first person to ask me about the Rising show. As such, I've been working on a document that describes the creation process and walks you through the show bit by bit. It's going to be a large document when finished (several pages), but it might be useful as a guide to show creation. I expect to have it finished soon, and of course I'll post it here on PL.

EDIT: It's done, and the thread is over here.

    Awesome, thanks Adam!

Not just in Rising, but in a lot of beam shows I've seen, I'm most impressed with the flat fan patterns that have bright white borders(edges) and/or white lines running through them. I have no idea how to create those patterns.. and then making them move??

    Brad,

I'd consider that part of cue building which IMHO is the underlying tenet of live or timeline show building. There are all kinds of tricks that can be employed to rapidly develop cues. I'd love to see cue design/fx be a topic.

Selecting the right base for a cue (shape, synth, etc), Where do efx go, in the cue or added on afterwards? What different categories of efx do (key, osc, etc) and how to properly select/apply. Building cues up using QuickCapture (including multi-zone cues).

With my admittedly "advanced beginner" comfort level with Beyond, I was able to build the above cue in less than a minute (albeit in a single layer). So if I wanted to be able to move the white lines independent of the underlying red fan, I'd have to spend another couple minutes building it as a synth cue (so that it retains layers that can be directly manipulated). Even after saying this and knowing that both approaches would yield an acceptable result, I couldn't tell you if either was the "best, most efficient/flexible" way of doing it.

We should all be able to envision what we want and build it without having to fight with the creation tools, I'd like there to be at least an hour devoted to cue design.

It all comes down to "right tool for the right job" and without a good understanding of what each tool can/should be used for things can get overwhelming quickly.

I'll just add I *really* like the idea of these kinds of tutorials for SELEM.

While SELEM is a crap-ton of fun anyway for 3-4 days, the chance to actually sit down and learn something in a proper setting just increases the value of the trip/experience. Thanks.

Well said. I'm interested in anything Beyond. Since I have the time I will be watching the how to videos too. I forgot they were out there.

I started to post yesterday that, this year, more than most, may be time for a discussion or poll. It's Adam's baby so, I'm just typing thoughts out loud here and maybe trying to generate some feedback to be mulled over.

SELEM, I believe, is many things to many people. Adam has always worked really hard to make sure that it continues to provide all of those important elements for everyone.

There are people who are permanent fixtures in the ion work room all weekend and for them, that's their SELEM and that's where they are happiest.

There are those who live in the Buy/Sell room and are perfectly happy to just sit an BS most of the weekend away in there.

Some hunker down in the auditorium and do nothing but watch shows and could care less about ClubSELEM.

Some are mainly interested in getting a little toasted and hanging in ClubSELEM every night and getting their eyegasm on.

A majority all want to be at the Pangolin talk on Saturday and some could care less about it since they're fans of other software.

Some are perfectly happy to spend a majority of time back stage and maybe just having some quiet time to tweak and work on their rigs a little or, get some guidance and help with them. There is so much to do and so much to see that it's a little tough trying to do it all.

I think several years ago, a big draw was bringing what you've built and getting chance to show it off and also, see it playing laser shows in a big space with a bunch of other lasers. The typical hobbyist never got much of chance to do that. Now... we've moved on to where projectors have gotten cheap and a number of us own several and regularly see several running together. It's a "bit" less about the lasers and watching "Above", "Rhythm is a Dancer"" and "Gradient Moby" for the umpteenth time and, more about the educational component. And of course the social component.

Since we "may" be having a few seminars that are going to be very popular and also more time consuming than usual, does it make sense to say, "Hey... from (example) 11 to 3 is devoted each day to seminar time and not be as concerned with making sure planetarium shows are running in the auditorium and things have to be going in ClubSELEM? Or... since Saturday is the most heavily trafficked day, make it educational from 11 am to 6pm and then 6-9 be the "prime" auditorium shows and 9-1 am being the "prime" draw time of ClubSELEM?

I don't know.... maybe I'm complicating things or trying too hard. Or... maybe it's just that "my" SELEM is more about opportunities for learning as opposed to just sitting and watching shows. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd have a day of education, a day of "fix my broken shit" (and "learn from watching as others broken shit gets fixed") and, a day of the auditorium shows all day in the air conditioning and then rock out in ClubSELEM all night.

I just know if things work out as we hope, there is going to be:

    Extensive Beyond training
    Audience Scanning Primer/education
Working with diodes and lenses and such
    Swami's LSX lesson
    What's Up with Pangolin
The DZ/EK Advanced ILDA Router "how to program"

I'm sure there will be scanner tuning and such and who knows what else.

I'd STILL like a thorough demo on color palettes/training. I get the basic premise of "how" to tweak them but, what I'd like... is start off with a projector and software (either QS, Beyond or LD2000) and play something (graphics, beams, whatever). Have it be pointed out to me what's "wrong". Then.... go in and "fix" the color palette. Save it and replay the show to see what the corrections actually "did'. Then know how to call it up when you're using that projector in the future.

That's a lot of more structured classroom-ish time I think, than usual so, I'm just wondering how we best fit it all in but not detract or take away from what other's SELEM experience is. Or... is everyone cool with sitting in on Beyond for example and not having something else that "has" to go on at that same time.

Or.... I can just shut the hell up and not worry about it since... it's going to be what it is and still be my favorite weekend of the year.
