It looks like I'll be coming this year also!
About the payment, is it as "gift" or for services etc?
Wow! Lots of activity in this thread in the past week. (It just figures that THIS would have to be the week that I've been away from PL...)
Really glad to see some more SELEM veterans signed up: Bill, Niel, Chris, Liz. But we've also got some new names on the list. Awesome! I have updated the first post in this thread to reflect everyone who has submitted their payment already. (At the time of this post anyway.)
Regarding the food, yes - Brad has consistently provided some awesome eats. And X-laser has graciously proved more than a few meals for us as well. Pangolin has supplied pizza on a few occasions, and there was that one famous bar tab at The Artist's Cafe (4 figures!) that magically disappeared thanks to Bill! Then we have to remember Newlin and his incredible Chocolate Chip Espresso Cookies. (I understand he's got something even better in mind for this year, in partnership with another generous PL member! Details to follow soon.) I also remember that Len helped out with the food a few times in past years.
This year we are still deciding what we will do for food, but rest assured there will be something.
As for the paypal payment, you can send it any way you want. If you send it as payment for goods or services, they (Paypal) will take a few percent in fees. Each year I budget for this, and I usually end up losing around $100 to paypal fees. (With an overall budget just north of 3 grand, this isn't a huge deal.) If you send your registration payment as a gift, that will eliminate the fees, but this only works if you send the money directly from your checking account or from your paypal account balance. If you use a credit card, they will still charge the fees, it's just that when you do a gift payment they make YOU pay the fees. So you'll end up paying slightly more.
Any excess funds are sent to Spec to help pay for PhotonLexicon hosting fees. So by sending your payment as a gift, that does put a little more money back into the forum.
As for the long drive - yes, it is a very long drive for many people who come to SELEM. I really want to stress to you all that you need to plan your trip safely. I know we all love to get in the car and just drive non-stop, but please consider your physical health. Not everyone can stay awake behind the wheel for 10 hours (or 16, or 21, or more) straight. (This is especially difficult when you are alone.)
We don't want to start the event with a tragedy. So please don't push yourselves! Take a break. Build a couple stops into the trip right from the start. And consider carpooling and ride-sharing. Not only is this a great way to ensure the driver is awake and alert (nothing like a bunch of geeks together to keep the argument, er, I mean conversation, flowing!), but it also helps people come to SELEM who might otherwise not be able to make the trip on their own.

XL Shirt but, if you can save the bucks for something else, I really don't need a shirt...
Got you both added to the list! (And just in time too - today the price goes up to $100. So good job getting in before early registration ended!)
