Allowing the use of plain old mic cable as DMX is bad practice, and though it 'works', the cable impedance can cause problems. This is why going 5pin forces folks to use the proper cables.
All your other connectors are to proper industry spec, why leave this one out?
As a hobbyist using quite a bit of DMX gear that comes with 3-pin connectors (along with the correct cables ), I for one am glad they stuck with 3-pin.
After all, DZ states they are including 5-pin adapters for both DMX In and DMX Thru.
Plus, one would hope that anyone dropping that kind of money for a very specialized piece of equipment would know the correct type of cables to use!!

    Looks awesome dude -
Looking forward to taking the plunge!!

Yup, I agree. I've got 100 DMX devices, all of them 3 pin. I have over a thousand feet of DMX cable in my roof running in temps topping 110F without issue. The included converter to 5 pin should be more than adequate.

DZ/EK: I'm still in for one, of course.

I would have to imagine this is an easy swap should a pro buyer want 5 pin. I'm glad they stuck with three as well since most everything I have uses 3 too. Maybe a small upcharge for 5 pin. "Add $15" or something. I see small upgrades in offerings of equipment all the time.

Entecc use 5 pin so it makes me wonder if maybe it should have been 5 pin with a 3 pin adapter given that most laserists buying these will a) be pros and b) using the Entecc for DMX out of their control software, at least if it's Pangolin that is, which again in the pro world is the most likely solution.

Just my 2 cents as no axe to grind either way - have no DMX equipment or need for multi-laser / fixture control.

Hey David, what's the mounting depth of the router?
Need to start planning for my portable rack requirements ...

Seriously, the 5 pin/3 pin thing is just people being 'more pro' than others. 3 pin is actually the most ubiquitous as cheaper (and not so cheap fixtures) either use both, or still use the 3 pin over the 5 pin.
If the majority of your kit is 3 pin, then surely the obvious thing is to use one adaptor on your Enttec, rather than on the kit end.

Anyone doing lighting in any serious manner will have a collection of 3 to 5 and 5 to 3 adaptors anyway (and 2/3 crossovers for the reverse wired stuff) so its really just a load of noise over nothing in my opinion (as a lighting AND laser guy). Yes, my desk, and ArtNet node and Enttec all output on 5 pin, and I have a selection of adaptors stored under the wrist rest for 3 pin out if I need it.

Even on the bigger shows, we get trunks of 3 and 5 pin cable from the rental house because there simply isn't a standard that the companies stick to, regardless of what 'level' of kit you're using.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

    lol! I think that's normal!

Thanks for the comments guys. Ed and I discussed the DMX connector pin issue many times and settled on the 3pin version for a number of reasons. Which ever way we went, 3pin/5pin, we knew we'd include the converters for both DMX IN and Passthru.

Stuka, thanks for the question about rack depth. I never thought of adding that to the website. The Router depth is roughly 8-1/2" or 215mm.

Also, a manual for the device is coming soon and should be available before we start shipping them.

    Cool on both counts!
Looks like my current portable case is still a go

    One other question -
Will you be including the Neutrik power cable, or do we need to plan on acquiring one separately?

    Hello,

Yes, a power cable will be included.

One end is a Neutrik Powercon and the other is a US Edison male connector.

Power cords for other countries will be made up as needed.
