Back then I doubt there was anything else, since the dry alkaline lakebed dust that is EVERYWHERE is so very bad for electronics and optics so expensive lights and lasers don't usually go out there unless it's a one way trip. That being said, I bet there's a lot more diode projectors now with all the DJ camps, but the term 'safety third' has been a mantra from the early days so who's to say now regarding variance requirements. You can always inquire with the BM organization to see if there are any hard rules for the event.
there are some new laser rules due to one of the rangers sustaining a laser injury last year:

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
