I do not recommend to remove the can from the laser diode. As far as i know the life time of the diode will degrade rapidly. This effect is especially for InGan substrate material.
Laser diodes without can will only last a few hundred hours!

Thanks for the references, but they leave me a little confused. It seems that the problem may be due to carbon depositing on the facet and the source of the carbon may be from the electroplated gold? Nevertheless, the presence of oxygen does not seem detrimental, so air may be superior to pure nitrogen. Removing the can may actually help by reducing the concentration of hydrocarbon that can be deposited especially if the source of the hydrocarbon is within the can.
@CDBeam - I'm curious about the ratios you posted earlier. They seem waaaaay off from common practise, specifically the red.
You are wanting 4 times as much red as green, but most people get very satisfactory results with 0.75 to 1.5 times red to green. Certainly, 1:1:1.5 of RGB gives a pretty good white balance.
I would think 4x the red would give a particularly pinkish white.
Even the big modules Logsquared built for us recently had 3W red, 6W 520 AND 10-12w 462 and they turned out a passable white.
