Thread: Help possibly fixing a CNI MGL-III-532 module (with pictures)

    Default Help possibly fixing a CNI MGL-III-532 module (with pictures)

    So before I go dumping money to replace my broken 200mw 532nm CNI module - which seemingly died way too young, I decided to open it up to see if there was anything obvious.

    I have never seen one opened up before, so I am not sure what I am looking at, but I did find two loose wires and two seemingly lonely solder connections.

    One of the loose wires is black and one is red... does anyone know if it's possible those two wires are suppose to be connected to the two solder joints pointed out in the photos below?

    If so, anyone have a good guess as to which one the red wire goes to and which one the black wire goes to?

    Bonus points for anyone who can identify what all these parts are, simply for my learning purposes

    I would say that's a good guess. The only thing to make sure of is which is the anode and cathode. I am not familiar with the C-Mount diodes so, I am not sure if the block is the cathode or not.

    Please be sure to solder the broken wires in correct polarity!

    The block is on positive (red wire) voltage (Anode) and the little copper leader on the diode is the Cathode (black wire)

    Yes, the strap is the cathode - and the block is the anode +.
    If you're the smartest person in the room, then you're in the wrong room.

    Sure!
    Red wire goes the block,and black goes to the little flag on the diode(cathode)
    Be aware!
    These diodes are sensitive to ESD ; heat(soldering at ~250C° - 483 F °- 3-4 sec max) and dust.

    I did a damn fine job at soldering everything back together, and well, no output...


    Oh well. I guess I am in the market for a ~200mw green module

    the good news is a basic 200mW module is roughly the same cost as a latte from starbucks. have you considered going 520nm diode? it'll be a little more expensive, but you'll have much better modulation.

    Your laser diode is gone to the blindness. Agreed with Swami,try to get a DI green 520nm module.Costs almost the same as a new 532.(200-500-700-1000mW take what you need or have money)Worst in beam profile but better at modulation and more lifespan.

    the 120mW 520 greens from DTR are not quite single mode, but have surprisingly good beam quality. they can be driven safely to 150mW (maybe a little higher).
