Sorry, I didnt mean the collimator lens, I meant the corrective lens/prisms for making the profile less of a long line than a point.
This can be performed on at most one axis at a time and so, can be done to each row in an array, but if you are looking at combining many diodes, you may choose to take advantage of this asymmetry in your compression scheme and live with the cost in increased divergence.

My first, ever, projector was a beast not meant for club use, but for a proof of concept and it occupied half of a typical optical table. The red diodes were the early, easily damaged red diodes that were available after they were harvested from DVD burners. The modules that I built were 4x4 or 16 diode arrays that were knife edged onto a very large Eye Magic scanner. The red power levels were state of the art at that time and were enhanced by being run at -20C in a hermetically sealed module. I did not make a video at the time, but I did create some images. I will look for them.

Yeah, I mean here it doesn't look like they used knife edging based on the photos, assuming at least some of the photos of the cases and beams are real. So I don't think they would go with having beam correcting optics for every diode.
I suppose if they didn't mind the divergence they could still make the final combined beam not a line but more symmetrical shape by arranging the diodes with angles similar to this:

I still think the part of the video with the beam shot with a drone is edited in but maybe the real deal won't be too bad.

Thinking about this some more using laser diodes for this kind of specific effect might not be a bad idea, I've seen some hid lights that can change color and the brightness lost for colors like blue is pretty bad. and they're very power hungry.

I did not make a video at the time, but I did create some images. I will look for them.
    Sweet
