Hi ghosttrain, I saw a post on facebook on something I found similar but also very fascinating on a larger scale.

I know it's probably not the answer you're looking for but maybe it'll provide some inspiration I don't really know where I would begin with a project like that, but I do hope you find what you're looking for.

I would bet that with the advent of cheap 3D printers you'd be able to make your own barrel. ONCE you find out the technique of making the metal ones. You are correct in that there is probably a forum of some sort dedicated to music boxes as they are collected all over the world.

This certainly sound like a patience-heavy task!

I've wanted to attempt the same - as myself and my great friends were inspired by a computer game "To The Moon" and they started to sell music boxes in the shape of pianos that play the iconic song from the game - http://freebirdgames.bigcartel.com/p...iano-music-box
    ---
And one of my friend's b-day was coming up, so, due to time constraint, I've had to modify the project and chose to go the "digital" route:
    Wooden piano box: eBay
Tiny audio 2.0 D-class amplifier with tiny speakers: eBay
    Mini audio Mp3 player: eBay
    ---
Regarding the central cylinder with the notes - perhaps using rough hand-sanding technique and then use a very fine solder to solder at the right places the individual notes? Solder should have sufficient hold if the target surface is not smooth and the spinning mechanism does not apply too much pressure to tear it off. Other option would be tiny nails into a wooden core - hammer them in and then remove their head - that should give sufficient effect too at low cost.

In any case, best of luck & patience!
