I like to break with my two fingers symmetrically under the cut and two thumbs on top, pulling the two pieces apart sideways as I start bend at the score from the trailing edge. For bigger plates, I slide the trailing edge of the score off the edge of the table and start picking it up while holding it as above. For thicker plates, I sometimes place a small ball driver under the score at the trailing edge and press down, like shown in this video.

If you are still having trouble I would recommend using a new wheels

Here's where I'm at now: I did not know about tapping. I tapped along the score, starting from the trailing edge as suggested. As explained, cracks appeared after each tap. With enough cracks from tapping in the end the pieces finally broke apart, however the cracks had caused the broken edge to not be smooth, but slightly irregular, with bumps.
I don't know if this was from tapping too hard, too wide gaps between each tap, too soft scoring or something else. Sure, I might guess by experimenting and more trial and error but I've wasted a lot of glass already so I thought it might be a good idea to ask before trying again.

If you have the rough shape you need, you can quickly finish the edges and remove the bumps with a diamond cutter from Harbor Freight Tools:

Thanks for the advice. Right now the bumps are a bit too big, but maybe if I make closer taps I can decrease the irregular cracks/bumps and finish it with that.
