There was some experimentation going on here on this thread. About 200mw/ diode was achieved it looked like, I dont know what the final results were though.

I know you can push them past their limits but I haven't heard of any that live a full lifetime when you do. Also, pulsing doesn't make the diode appear brighter. Although your eye gets 250mw 1/2 the time, it gets 0mw the other half of the time. So, it looks like 125mw... or maybe even less since there is ramp time to peak diode brightness (ie the diode is not at 250mw during the entire pulse).
