    Default Dvd RW Laser Diodes

    Hi Guyz

    Is there any way to combine lots of these DVD RW Laser diodes to produce a powerfull laser beam ?

    Each Modern 16 speed DVD burner has a diode of around 100-200mw output.

    If say 10 were used in a tandem sort of fashion it could give a beam power of say 500mw - 1watt based on optic power losses ...

    I thought of useing Dicros with each laser doing a 90 degree turn with all beams being parallel ....

    Any ideas

    It has been done but using a polarizing cube beamsplitter to combine the outputs.

    To clarify: It can be done *ONCE* with a polarizing beam-splitting cube. One laser is oriented with it's polarization rotated 90 degrees with respect to the other laser, and then the two beams can be combined. But that's it. You end up with a randomly polarized beam that can't be combined with another beam of the same color.

    Some people have had tried placing a knife-edged mirror in the beam path so that one laser is reflected parallel to another. The idea is to get the beams as close as possible. But of course, no matter how hard you try, you can't actually make them overlap. You can get them very close, however. Close enough that it looks like a single, fat beam.

    stupid question here- what happens if you combine 2 randomly polarized laser beams with a non-polarized BS cube? Lots of power loss?

    Im not entirely sure because I have not tried it myself as it seems a great waste of power but I believe:

    You will end up with the power of up to one half of one diode minus the loss in the cube.

    Diode output is more like 70mw - 130mw

    DVD burners... as far as I know that's about all you will get out of them unless you overdrive them a bunch.

    I've heard that you can push the 18X pretty hard- maybe real hard with TEC.. and/or maybe even more with pulsed operation (for beamshows)
