Default Lumia effects at a light festival

Last January, I participated at a quite large light festival here in Switzerland, with a lumia-based project, and thought I should share it here.

    Video here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLFylfv7FRs

A few details about the project :
    - Home made lumia wheel, DMX-controlled, based on a recycled gobo wheel taken out of a moving light. Was quite a lot of hard work to adapt for the lumia glasses (increase size of gobo holders, etc)
    - 9 different lumia glasses/effects, each one could rotate on himself at 2-3 RPM (had to find a way to go slower than stock speed)
    - Automated control of laser effects + DMX wheel by software timeline
    - Laser projector used was a Kore 12W RGB. Nothing too powerful as the projection surface was quite dark!
    - Ran for 13 days, 4 hours per day
    - This was my first lumia project

    Hope you enjoy.

Nice. 12watts! Was the installation attended to constantly during operation in case something went wrong?

Yes I was always around there, and also could constantly monitor the installation via my 4G remote system with camera I developped.

12W wasn't too much I assure you, laser light is loosing a lot it's energy through those lumia filters

This looks like nothing I have seen before. I wonder if spectators had any clue what they were looking at.

Probably not any clue, but they seemed to enjoy looking at it

    obviously

Bet it was still brighter than a 10K lumen video projector.

Yeees obviously, especially on this dark surface.

This being said, with a video projector I'm still wondering if it would even be possible to simulate such mechanically generated, random lumia shapes...

You'd need a program to either render or generate caustics via Physically-Based Rendering shaders. I'm not sure if there is any but could be possible with hours of coding in Unity. A photorealistic rendering engine in 3ds max and Maya can do that too but rendering time can be several hours per video.

You'd still lose laser speckle, good contrast and with 4K resolution you would need the projection to not cover more than 45 degrees of the spectator's horizontal field of view to get the same detail as with a lumia otherwise they would be able to detect the individual pixels because our eyes can see up to 90 pixels per degree at our center of vision.
