    Default DIY Raman

So want to diy a Raman spec using dpss as source. Anyone know of inexpensive monochromator/detector setups that Plot? Also looking for good line filters to block 532nm. Anybody try the spec from the 473nm units on eBay?

Buy one set from Wizard of Orem.. With the laser. You'll need a USB to serial cable. I have 12 of them for undergrad labs and community outreach at work. You can get simple Raman out of them, known to work with polar molecular fluids and a few solids so far.

I calibrate them with 22 different wavelengths. I get a fit better then .9985 on the regression.

That actually is a full RAMAN system, with the filters for blue. Your not going to 10 inverse centimeters close into the laser line with it, but for organics, polar molecules, and bio-materials with decent Raman shifts they work fine. I have some customized software for it, customized for undergrad lab use, and the black box on the front is the RAMAN edge filter.. In every one of those units I've bought, it was an issue with the laser head, not the spectrometer. The wizard is the PhD who runs the company that recycles those. As shipped it covers about 445 to 656 nm and ~0.3 nm resolution.

I have a day off coming soon, why don't I pop up for day, bring the new yellow and bring you one spectrometer to play with. Its summer session, so there will be no immediate panic if the senior tech is not roaming the halls of the IVY Tower. I already booked Friday off.

Come on by. Sounds good. The reason I was staying away from blue was fluorescence. I figured it would bury the Raman signal

Got the Raman running with the 473 filter. Not bad at all. Will be better after the calibration. Thanks for the assist. That 473 is really weak. I need to tweak just a tiny bit more power out for a good Raman signal. Surprised I see anything.

Let me know if you need a different 473 nm head, handpicked and tuned.

I took the photodiode off and pricked the spatial pinhole off then tweaked it and it is brighter but not that much. I think it’s 10 mw. That should do but I need to put the fiber connector back in. Thinking a piece of black shrink in the hole to block the phototransistor pickoff should work.

imhave a second unit coming and the non working one so got two more chances at bit more power but for Raman this should do.

There is a trick we can try to do with the photodiode on the BW Teks...
I need to try it first. Ever so slightly reduce the signal from the photodiode to the analog board with a potentiometer as a signal divider. You don't want to slam the pump diode full on and eliminate the headroom for achieving stability. That would drive the Peltier control loop nuts.
