Ideally, this is what I would like to do.

However, at nearly 50 years old I have learned that once I start down that road I am not going to stop until I have achieved my goals. That comes with the risk of becoming a tremendous time and money sink, a problem I already share with several other equally expensive and technically challenging interests.

I want to, I have the technically capability, I just don't dare tempt fate. :P

    ?

Between the optics alignment, electronics knowledge, soldering skills, computer skills, technical info for what to purchase, knowledge on where to get things and normal know how. Its a lot more challenging than most people realize, especially to do it right!

I work in nanofabrication where we focus beams of neon, helium and gallium ions with electrostatic lenses.

    Your beams are HUGE! :P

It's really time more so than money, a rarer and rarer commodity.

Ion Milling? This guy could write us some of the best effects gratings master masks in the world. Or at least tell us who has a system out for hire. Better keep him here!
