Is 4 or 5 watts really sufficient for a surgical laser? Thinking back to the surgery lasers I've seen (Trimedyne and Laserscope units), even the old argon units were capable of an order of magnitude more power, to say nothing of the peak pulse power output of the Q-switched YAGs.

Sure, we've all seen low power dental argons before, but they were only for curing dental cement and filling material, not actually cutting and cauterizing flesh. I've never heard of anyone doing laser dental surgery with a 5 watt laser though. Am I missing something?

... if you'll need more power, then think about combining more diodes into one fiber - here I've built a 6x1.5W-diode-head with a combined power of 9Watts on a spot of 0,3mm diameter ... now think about 6x7W (or roughly 40W) into a 0,4mm-fiber and refocussing this power on 0,3mm ... or combine even more diodes

First dental diode sugical lasers were about 2w, now power is about 8-10w. Main difference is speed of cutting, and many of them do not use full power, mostly about 2-3w for cutting.
