New format for laser shows - time to upgrade the show production

Your argument is that ilda is the best because it's what everyone is using. You mock the use of wav because you think it's somehow backdated to the 90s. This is literally a thread about a new format. Can't you see how contradictory that is?

How do think anything will get any better if you can't get past the idea that ilda is the end all be all?

And by the way, I never said it should be replaced by wav or text or whatever. All of that can and does coexist.

Do you think the current ilda format will ever be supplemented in any way? Or is it more likely that it will be replaced?

Do you think the commercial product companies have any motivation to develop a better free, open standard for generic data exchange?

You so clearly don't get it.

ILDA does what it does and is obviously the current defacto standard. But it does have limitations. It only stores a limited concept of frames and maybe pallets, but probably not.

No. I looked into it for awhile and actually wrote another application called Bombora, named based on the following:

Bombora is an indigenous Australian term for an area of large sea waves breaking over a shallow area such as a submerged rock shelf, reef, or sand bank that is located some distance from the shoreline and beach surf break. In slang it is also called a bommie.^[1]

I started development based on some interest from DZ and Frank at SELEM and it allowed streaming WAV files to a DAC while being able to adjust settings in real time. I got a prototype loosely working but lost interest in it due to the fact that other than a few shows I came across, there was absolutely no interest from anyone other than the above two. I lost track how many years I have been messing around with this stuff but I can honestly say that there has never been interest in WAV import other the above two, and mainly just to be able to play back old shows, not to create anything new.

laser consoles don't output waves. they output cv signals that can be sampled into waves, but you know that and are just trying to be deceptive.

As a matter of fact, all of them do as well as every other kind of laser console, modular synthesizer or anything else that makes signals for laser projectors.

No. I'm trying to point out that the ability to record any laser signals to a much better resolution than can be detected in the display exists, has been around for a very long time and is always being improved. There are devices available now that can do 32-bit at 384KHz. I think you can find a sweet spot somewhere in that range. That recording is going to be a multichannel data stream with the samples interleaved together. There's a name for that...... Ummm..... Oh yeah! It's a WAVE!!!

Something else that should be of interest to you is that there is no limit to the number of points (samples) per frame in a wave. In ilda, there is a limit of 65535. That might seem like a huge number, but for those very detailed long exposures you do on phosphorescent material or blue print paper, this is not an unusual number at all.

You could store any number of consecutive frames in a wave and get them all back in frames.
