    eliezer-

can you please tell us if this projector has an ascension number and cdrh variance for the u.s.?
also please provide the same variance info for your 300mw rgy projector.
is the rgy really $550 u.s.?

by no means am i the end all, be all of variancing projectors. BUT, i have done a few. I dont think there would be too much involved with this. an interlock on the case. IR filter on the modules. (not the red obviously). and a shutter and i think this could be varianced pretty successfully. the bottom plate where everything is mounted the CDRH sometimes has a problem with if its "chincey" but with a nice solid breadboard i dont see ANY problems with certifying one of these.

i can make a few calls if interested. again, im no variancing pro. but have a pretty good relationship with my local guy and can see what his thoughts are.

Other than a projector variance, what permission do you need to do a show at a dance club?

    in the USA...

    1. projector needs to be certified (thats the ascension #)
    2. you or your company needs a variance to operate that laser projector
    3. each event that you do needs a laser light show report (although i heard that is slowly going away.)

it can get kinda confusing but if you have specific ??'s shoot away and ill try to help.

i thought the ascension number for the projector is not the actual variance number for the device.
doesn't a projector have a variance number as well?

i know a device can have an ascension number and still not be cleared for sale in the us.
the cdrh issues an ascension number while considering a device and then either issues a variance or the ascension number is in some way finalized as approved.

i actually had a case where something we bought from overseas had an ascension number but was not yet certified by the cdrh for sale in the u.s.

it may seem like splitting hairs, but don't take an ascension number as proof a device is cdrh approved, regardless of your operators variance.

thank you for the clarification. like i said, i am in NO WAY a variance pro. although i have never tried to do a product report for an overseas projector either. so this is why my experinces with "ascension #'s" are different.

i will try to get some proper info rather than just guesses today from my local CDRH guy.

I'm mainly just curious. There is a club that I like that I wouldn't mind doing a free show or two at just for fun. But, if I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to do so then it probably isn't worth my time.

Does anyone just do it without getting the permissions? I never would because it isn't worth the risk to me but am curious how often it happens.
