    Default Gamecube laser diode?

Are these good for anything? I think they are 668nm but not sure nor can I find out their power. I also know that they tend to fail but not sure how. Is a duff one likely to be any use for playing with? I.e. do they just drop output power a bit (wishful thinking)?

I've got a couple of GC's to pick up but won't waste the petrol if they are useless.

    Thanks - Dave

Much Better with a liteon x20 DVD burner for <£20.
incidentally Robin (uk-laser) mentioned that one drive he stripped had a non standard (ie not 5.6mm) case and were likely to be a bugger to mount. I just opened up an Optiarc (new name for Sony opical drives) and this has not only the same open frame diode that the Liteons have but the whole aoptical pick up assy is identical.

If you need to ask the question 'whats so good about a laser' - you won't understand the answer.

Thanks - The Gamecube diode is only 1mW. No use to man nor beast.
