Not wishing to be a pedant or anything (oh go on then, I am) but I'd take issue with the statement “...I'm ...extremely pleased to be working with Blackpool Illuminations, the true Northern Lights."

Surely the Aurora Borealis is the true Northern Lights, recognised as such around the world.

There are certain things set in stone and you can't just upturn them for a bit of 5 second PR spin.

But just in case someone has changed the rules and you now can, I am Jesus Christ so do as I say or my Dad will get ya !!

Blessed be are they that follow our Lord Soforene

Hi, I live in Blackpool. I believe that the laser from the tower can be remotely turned off by air traffic control in Blackpool Airport, so there shouldn't be any problems with pilots. I am guessing that they just call someone at the tower and tell them to turn it off but i don't know how it happens.

Glad to hear that the laser isn't just for a couple of weeks this year. It looks great.

sadly the plan was to go up tonight .... I met Greg at the Tower .... he had some programing to do .... but unfortunately most of the tower staff had left ( well it was a friday evening ) but for health and safety reasons we had to be escorted to the uppermost level by three tower engineers but as no staff were available they would not open the upper level ...

Greg was a bit pissed off as he wanted to do some work tonight as everything is being switched off on sunday... and he wanted to try some new stuff ......

he has promised me a return visit .... greg is a great guy and very knowedgable ...... he explained to me that ... the system is interlocked by two direct dish radio links one from the iluminations headquarters .... from there they can switch the Yag on and off, control the power and the show .... the other link is controlled by the airport .... they can set the flight schedule so the laser can only run whilst ther is no air activity and the also have a master control to switch everything off in the case of emergency incoming air traffic ... Greg was suprised and also pleased that the airport had been so understanding and agreeable to take on this role ......

but at the end of the day .... a lot of people are flying in to blackpool to see the illuminations .... so a new attraction in Blackpool will help the airport grow .........

hopefully .... if i get a return visit ... i will let you all know about this wonderfull beast

thankyou greg ... for the chat

    all the best ... Karl

Bummer on not getting to see it - this time.
I understand why they need staff present - but 3 staff! Is it me or is this a little ott.

Love the dish links for control to airport and I agree its great that the airport are being so supportive.

Anyway Karl - or anyone else who has seen it - what exactly does the laser do? Or rather how long is it on for?
I have heard conflicting views that lead me to think
a/ its on every hour for about 10 mins
b/ its on every 10 mins for abot a min
c/ its on at 6:30 for 10 mins and thats it.
d/ its not on at all and you have to imagine it yourself.

I made the last one up - can you tell
