Not for people with a crack version anymore. You have to fill in the dongle number.

Great new stuff this time and very stable!

I never knew that there was any cracks for it!
Whats the point when you need the DAC that comes with it.

    Cool

Crack? What crack? Someone hacked the Rockey4 encryption? That's news... That thing is supposed to be *really* secure! (I know a couple developers that were thinking about paying the license fee to add that dongle to their product. They might want to re-think that!)

I heard about a cracked version of one of the *older* Mamba Black versions that was floating around out there, but as I understood things, it explioted a bug in the older code that didn't call the dongle subroutine for all right-click events. That created a loophole. But you had to be running that older version of Mamba Black for the crack to work. (We're talking really old - like version 1.6-something here... I never actually bothered to try it myself as I own Mamba Black.) Anyway, if you installed a new version it would kill the crack because Medialas fixed the right-click bug in the newer versions. Still, it didn't actually crack the dongle...

But a crack that breaks the rockey4 dongle encryption - that would be quite a feat! (And really bad news for a whole bunch of software companies, not just Medialas.) Are you sure they've cracked that? (It does sound that way since they're requiring a registration before you can download the update...)

Anyway, back on topic... I still have my copy of Mamba Black (and the dongle). I suppose I ought to download the new version and check it out just to see what they've changed. (Funny, once I got my Pangolin board I totally stopped playing with Mamba Black.) Even though I haven't used it in months, I can't bring myself to sell it. (Which is probably why I still have my Alpahlite too!)

Heh! Good point Bill. Though I suppose one could consider the QM-2000 board to be the world's most complicated dongle! Nah - scratch that. The host computer becomes the dongle for the QM-2000! (After all, the QM-2000 is doing all the work... What good is the computer for except to feed it power!)

But yeah, dedicated hardware is always going to beat any sort of dongle-based protection. As Medialas found out with their earlier release, it's easy to forget a line or two of code and open up a gaping hole in your dongle-based security.

It really bothers me to think that someone actually cracked the Rockey 4 encryption though. That's unexpected.

Yes, I agree. A hardware PCB like the QM is the best dongle.
But Mamba Black is created to be 'open software' for a lot of DAC's, not only for one DAC. That's why you can use MB for a lot of other 'thirth party' stuff like the Easylase, QM2000, Riya, LTP, MB-USB, ...
To protect the software (a little) you can only use a donlge for it, I think.

With version 1.90 Medialas goes a little bit further than that. You only receive an update if you can prove that you are the owner of a dongle.

The way that I read the info for the new version, it looks like the software will be keyed to your unique dongle. If they then have something encrypted within your personal copy that also identifies who that version was for, then if a bootleg/cracked copy emerges they will be able to trace who has been ripping them off.
