    I once had a play with a 543nm HeNe - only 1mW but a lovely colour.
    I imagine 556nm is a real mushy-pea green.
Can't wait to see it in the flesh.....

Actually Robin its very very yellow. More so than green though it would be classed as a green laser???!!!
As well as my reds dying on NYE the 556 packed up too as I said in my write up the molex connector is a bit burned and sure enough this was the reason. I have now soldered the 2 red wires direct to the PCB - and its much happier.
Eventually I will put in a row of screw connectors instead of the molex. Tell you what tho. there are some fat diodes to rectify the AC in and the 2 for the red wires get very hot. I have measured that there is about 2A through them - maybe they should be TO220 diodes on a heatsink.

If you need to ask the question 'whats so good about a laser' - you won't understand the answer.

Considering 555 is the height of our visual acuity, I'd say 556 is pretty bright.

Duh! got me spectrum the wrong way round.
Better get the dunce's cap out.

If the diodes are < 80/90 C I'd let them be (unless they are heating adjacent components)
As Vf drops with temperature they are more efficient when run hot.
