Hi James,
I can understand where you are coming from having worked for IBM for many years as a programmer and techie on their AS/400 and iSeries machines working along side people with Sun Spark Stations, but we are talking about a majority of people using computers that do not have the time or inclination to take on a UN*X based system, most people want an easy to use system with available software. Now I am not saying that the current flavours of UN*X machines are not easy to use but they certainly do not have the software base that MS based machines have.
All this sparks of the console battles and browser wars that happened a few years ago and personally it makes me disspair.
Please everyone just accept that every person is different and can make their own choices of what they want to use as a computer and what software they want to use and what they want to program in.
Please understand that I am not having a go at anyone, so do not take it personally.

Right. Most people have more important things to worry about than how their computer works. They just want to get what they need done as easy and as quickly as possible. Microsoft clearly is superior at this... at least more than the UNIX variants. I'll leave Mac out of this.
I feel the same way about programming. I'm using .NET because it is a much more efficient use of my time in regards to getting what I need to get done and it still offers performance comparable to C++. It would be nice if it wasn't reliant on a huge .NET Framework package but that is a tiny price to pay. A lot of people moan and groan about .NET because they think it is going to slow down their computer or other similar things. But it doesn't. It's just a class library and only the small portions of it that are necessary get loaded when you run an application. It's like Java on steroids, but in a much much much more efficient way.

"It's like Java on steroids, but in a much much much more efficient way."
Good thought. This isn't the first free/open source project I have used or worked on that used .net, and, I say, if this is what enables more efficient use of your time to produce and release these programs, more power to you!
thanks again for your time and efforts. I am working on the sound card/wave interface dll.

Will you kids please stop hitting each other and get of the playground please...
I don't like M$ either. Since the beginning of their existence, they take interesting idea's from other people or companies, buy or steal it, put their stamp on it, and force it on any computer you buy. Since the web arrived, they put up a big FY finger to any standard out there. They've done it again with the OOXML Iso certification. Now they want to buy Yahoo because M$ sucks at search engine innovation.
Still, I use winXP for 90% , ubuntu for 10%. and VS C++ 2003 is one of my daily apps. I personally don't want to use .Net because it looks to much like JAVA and the crosscompatibility (MONO) is almost reverse engineered. Java is also open source now. I don't care about it's performance and neither does my 2.2GHz quadcore cpu. If I want something fast, i'll do it in C and make a wrapper.
So, who cares what tools you use to make your program, it's a personal decision! As long as it's stable and the user knows what he needs and how to work with it, anything is fine for me.
Some say M$ has the easiest OS to work with. I say that's because for 95% of the people it's their first OS they ever worked with. It's the OS that has been forced down your throat.
Anyway, anyone working on lasersoftware should continue doing so. There is always gonna be criticism whatever you do.
Good luck to both of you.. And may pangolin make an SDK for the FB3 soon!

LOL. Yea, you guys get the hell out of my thread.
If you want to bitch about MS find your own thread. This thread is for updating progress of my software.

If people didn't battle over such things we'd all be stuck with the worst crap.
"most people want an easy to use system with available software."
This is exactly why cross platform application development is such a nice thing.
"Most people have more important things to worry about than how their computer works."
I'm a computer consultant, software engineer, systems administrator. It's my job to know how a computer works.
"I'll leave Mac out of this."
Too bad. Mac OSX is Berkley UNIX.
"It's the OS that has been forced down your throat."
BINGO!
I am not trying to discourage anyone from programming. I am suggesting that you might want to broaden your horizons. You will find that if you form you ideas on a variety of different platforms that you will learn a lot about how to make them all happy with the same code. This make your coding style wicked solid. This is the idea behind "Generic" programming. A computer is a computer.

I'm really not trying to make you mad.
I'm hoping to encourage you to look farther and be happier.

Well, I am. There is a lot more to programming than generic C++. Perhaps it is you that are being a bit closed minded about it all. You're limiting yourself and it will hurt you in the long run because you are being inflexible about choosing the right tool for the job. Using .NET was one of the KEY things that enabled our company to get a multimillion dollar contract with Intel. Some companies want us to use C++ and we'll do that, too. It's all about keeping the customer happy and choosing the right tool for the job.
I find happiness in my wife and 2 daughters, my friends, my dog, and things like that. Generic C++ or Unix will just distract me from those things.
I appreciate your encouragement but you're very much barking up the wrong tree. I really don't care to discuss it further and would appreciate it if you would take it to another thread. Seriously.
