It would be interesting to know under what circumstances these die. I plan on using the current regulating lm317 circuit for simple unmodulated use with a battery.

the laser was made by drlava and was running from an LM317 based power supply, it ran great at 10mw until one day it was just crap (outputs around 1mw now)

    doesn't sound good
were you using a battery or dc power supply?

just a plain DC wallwart power supply

was it a regulated supply, if it was not regulated you can get small voltage spikes a typical red diode without a feed back regulator will normally not be a affected by a small voltage spike unless it is a bad one, but the ps3 diodes are not very forgiving on such matters

It was an unregulated wall-wart, however the power input to the circuit has a 1.2kHz low pass filter that cuts down most power supply transients. One issue I have found with these diodes is that, because the diode can is grounded, the collimating casing is grounded, and if the laser is handled in a static environment, a charge could be partially transmitted through the diode to the driver just by picking up the collimating casing with a charge on your person.
