Apparently March 21st they are going to beam a green laser on the moon big enough to where we can see a logo. I for one would love to see that.

They'll have to go copper vapor... I feel sorry for any satllites that happen to pass through that beam.

Something makes me doubt it will work... I think it has something to do with the sun shining on the moon and the sun being a fair bit more powerful than any laser.

Well they could always project on the Dark Side of the Moon!

Looks like a gag, no chance of it happening anyway. Projecting an image 220,000 miles away to a surface only about 2000 miles wide. The scan angle would be next to nothing plus the scan head would vaporize with the amount of power you'd probably need to make anything even remotely visible. And we haven't even talked about beam divergence!

For a giggle, pseudonomen137's calculator tells us that for a 3.8meter spot size on the moon (at its average distance from the earth) you would need a .00001mR diverging beam...

    Cool

Yeah, bogus for sure, but nevertheless I posted a message for all PhotonLexicon folks. Should be up in a little bit.

Hmm... Either it takes a long time, or the page is broken. Tried again just now with a valid e-mail address, and it's still not updating. Eh - maybe they have a built-in lag or something. Click and drag on the moon to expose the south pole. Eventually you should see a dot down there with a message for PhotonLexicon members...

I totally agree, according with my pocket GPS, on March 21 is full moon, so that date is absolutely wrong for any projection... .

Tonight instead is perfect. Does anybody wanna try to hit the reflector that Nasa has placed many years ago?
Remember to wait a second or so to see the blink back

There isn't a visible laser powerful enought to do the job.

The beam would have to be miles wide when it hit the surface in order for it to be wide enough to see it from earth.

It would..........unless you made it from unobtainium! Which by the way, I have a shit load of that stuff!

Only Bill Benner could pull this off... But it's pending FAA, FDA, CDRH, ADHD, HDTV, WTF and WYSIWYG approval.
