static beams, minimum mw for visibility
i need to write up a proposal for a light demo and i was wondering what the minimum power would be for a visible beam of each red (635 or 650) green and blue
the beams will be static

Ned more info. You want to "See static beams"... In what sort of a venue? With fog or without? What kind of lighting?
In a pitch-black room (absolutely no other light apart from the laser) with a good bit of fog in the air, a single 5 mw green beam will look very bright in a room.
Start scanning that beam around in that same room though, and you'll want to increase the power by a factor of 10 or 20, depending on how big the room is.
Add some other lighting in the room (still dark, mind you) and you'll need to increase the power by a factor of 50 to 100. (Or even 200 if it's a really big room)
Get rid of the fog (with all the other factors above) and you'll have to increase the power by a factor of 500 to 1000. Maybe more, depending on the size of the room.
And if you want to go outside - well, to be short and sweet: if you can't go big, go home. Figure a minimum of 20 watts, with 40 being closer to ideal for an outdoor show. (Outdoor shows have lots of ambient lighting, little to no fog, plus a huge area to cover, so they need the most power.)
