Since 1995, several pilots have experienced temporary eye injuries due to lasers fired into the sky during concerts by rock groups or other entertainment events.
Thats the part that bugs me the most...

It's not very specific, though, is it - sounds more like hearsay rather than actual factual reporting.

what bothers me the most is the whole line of site issue. How can you get into a cockpit window with a laser from the ground. helicopter I understand but commercial aircraft seems highly unlikely unless the aircraft is on the ground

I know Benner has a good article that covers this on the Pangolin site as far as flash blindness goes...however, tracking an aircraft at cruising altitude I can see as being difficult (but not impossible) as the cockpit windows are above the bottom of the fuselage. Firing a laser at a low flying aircraft (taking off or landing) would be easier, but still - who the fu** would be stupid enough to do this? And who, in any sense of mind (right or wrong) would do it to a police helicopter?

I suppose because I know it's wrong and wouldn't think of doing it, I find it hard to understand.

Soon, the thought police will be after us......................... Okay, maybe not.

It won't be possible to stop people from shining lasers at things unless they ban lasers. Best thing they can do is educate people about it being wrong and also train pilots so that they know how to react.
