What exactly does IDLA actually stand for?
Its a tricky one for google to work out. I know what it does and what it can be used for but not actually sure what it stands for.

Hi Lambo
It stands for ...
International
Laser
Display
Association

If you need to ask the question 'whats so good about a laser' - you won't understand the answer.

well you werent wrong then!
Ilda devised a standard connection for laser projectors hence the term 'ilda connector'

PS - welcome btw

There is also an open file format for laser vector art called ILDA (file.ild).

the file format refers to a pc file format. Your software, Pangolin, Mamba, LDS, etc. will turn this into signals that it will send to a (usually) external DAC. This converts the digital file infomation into analogue and/or digital signals that your scanner and lasers are controlled by. Some hardware such as FB3 can read files from a card (flash card) though im not certain it's in ilda format by the time it gets to the card - maybe someone can correct me on this, but the FB3 or other card reading DAC will still convert the file to voltage signals for the projector.

@Lamborgini
Your getting a little bit confused.
ILDA stands for International Laser Display Association.
The ILDA connector is a connector that uses the standards set out by them (google "ILDA pinout").
The .ild files are ones that conform to a standard., to send the files to a projector you need software that can read the .ild files and a DAC (digital to analogue converter) to interface between the PC and laser.
Some of the *common* DACs are the Pangolin FB3, QM2000, QM32, Easylase, Mamba USB, Riya and a few others. There are also some DIY DACs like Popelscan and one modified from a sound card.
