He's put a FlashBack3 in there so it only needs DMX in. I imagine he's taking power and DMX in the same way the lamp power cable went in- through the inside of the armature.

I wish moving heads weren't basically illegal here :-(

can you control the movement at all? or is it all done by built in DMX?
Thank you, will post beam video when I it's wired up electrically.

I will be using this unit for beamshows, not too much animation.
The unit will have main DMX control.
The DMX features on the FB3 is awsome! So I will have a dedicated DMX board for this unit.
That way I can control the whole thing from DMX.
You will get alot better sound to light features on the FB3 with DMX than USB. My DMX controller has a line-in that I use to trigger laser movements/effects. DMX control is also superfast.
Other advantages on DMX control is that distance from control panel is not a problem at all.

I will also put a USB cable on this so that It can run LiveQuick and upload animations to the memorycard.
This is a so called "smart laser", No 25pin ILDA on this one.

Here you can see how much you can do with DMX:

    That is correct.
Will need 230V AC power, Ground, DMX, USB and Interlock signals.
I think there will be no problems with twisting, planning on using double insulated high flex wires.

Wow, so it is just a wire with enough extra length to twist. I guess I always assumed moving heads had a slip ring type setup in them.

I was also thinking the same thing before.
I think its normal to just use wires, thats why they all only rotates around 540 degrees instead of unlimited =)
The ones installed in this head was very flexible, I was supprised of how little movement there was in the wires when turing the moving head.

There is no cables, all seperate wires.
Think of 6 thin wires on the same path, twist one end 180 degrees, not much stress on the wires at all.

Including shrink both x and y to 0... Be careful....

I think a better idea would be to mount the FB3 in the base of the laser (or in a separate case) and cable to the head with flexible wire... Then you will be able to use USB as well as DMX if you choose to..

It will never be controlled totally live but pre programmed, changing programs live.
But you could override that, I see what you mean. Thank you for highlighting that.

My plan is to have a USB lead from the head to the base with a USB connector in the base.

    Having FB3 in the head requires 7 wires between head/base. (dmx=3, USB=4)
Having it in the base will require 9 wires. (Power=2, Laser=2, Scanners=4, ground=1)
If I had a 5v powersource in the base that would make the same number.
But I think its better having it away from all noice, only surrounded by laser and signal level electronics.

    But thankyou for all suggestions.

    Default DAY 3

I just have to reccomend Viasho, the service is great!
Frank at Viasho saw this thread and is giving me advice.

I also did know that I would loose my warranty by opening the Laser Power Supply, but thats what you have to pay when doing a mod like this.

Today I started mounting the fans on the backside of the head.
I'm thinking one fan on each side of the alu baseplate.
Have to do some testing to see if this is sufficiant cooling.

    The backplate with fans mounted:

    View from the inside:

View from the back of the unit:

I also started on the electrical bit today.
Connected the powersupply to mains and the laser.
I found out that 4 wires where not in use, so I removed them.

Here you can see the wires from the power supply to the Laser Head:
I think there will be enough space to keep the original hotplug on the laser this way.

I also connected the DT40 scanner amps and the galvos to power and FB3:

Here is the final picture today..
    Pretty compact layout.

Now what remains is to connect the intensity signal and the rest of the FB3 signals.
Then It will be interesting to see if everything still works. =)

Next phase will be to route the wires needed down to the base of the Moving Head, find some quick connectors that will let me slide out the whole laser projector without alot of work.
Then the base needs some new connectors and wireing.

Finally I have to create a front and a dustfree chamber around the optics.
Sand down the unit and paint it.
Then the final assambly with termal greese and locktight all over the unit.

    Now I need to sleep..

    Default DAY 4

Today I finished the connections and routed them throu the moving head and to the base. That is power, dmx and usb.

I also connected the dmx signals to the dmx board on the base so that they are connected toghether.
Finnaly I put on all the covers.
The unit is very small and compact, I like it =)

Now I only need to create a frontplate and hook up the safety shutter.

And here is some images of the unit in action:
(My camera sucks and the power is turend down way low)

I will have to work 12 hour days now for 2 weeks included the weekends so there will be little time to finish the unit.
But I will continue the laser after 2 weeks because then I will have 2 weeks freetime.

Yesterday I got engaged to my girfriend ;P
Thats with help from the laser and the sky.

This is how I did it (11,7MB)

She did not understand anything before she saw the rings.
Before she hated me spending that much time and money on the laser, but now she thinks its cool. ;o)

We also did some more laser on the sky last night..
    Skylaser.wmv (20,9MB)

In real lifte the images on the sky is far better than on camera.
I have to try some animation shows and film from different locations around the naborhood ;o)
Tonight its midsummerparty all ower the country, many people outside. Will maby supprice my naborhood with a cool laser show tonight if I'm not going out to town myself.

I also have to film some beams for you guys =)
I know I would wanted to see some...

And also, the temperature inside the head feels like room temperature, even when runnig full power for long periods, it just dont heat up.
The two fans on the back is the only fans used.
I used 5V from the laser power supply to power the FB3 and the 12V fan output on the laser power supply to power the thw fans.
So there is actually just two powersupplies. The laser and DT40.
I will use the moving heads built in 12V fan supply to power the safety shutter circuit.
I'm very happy with the results so far.
Thankyou Viasho for a great Laser product, and also Jian for the DT-40pro
Will recommend the products to anyone.

That is amazing. Congratulations on the engagement.

(let's just hope there were no airplanes in the sky, when you proposed )
