    Thanks Adam for your comments ..

    Just going back to the HB laser sale now on,,, (no I dont work for HB)

    I now have the list in front of me and they do two reds one at 658.. like the Maxxy and another at 643... so I wasnt dreaming like I thought.
    This 643 is 700-850mw 3mm beam 1mrad.
    Now my thought was this must be considerably brighter than 440mw at 660 I think.
    They want 1592.00 Euros on sale for the OEM module.

    It also comes in larger more powerful sizes but with increasing beam and mortgage...

    Any thoughts on this ..

    Can be seen at www.hb-laser.com

    Cheers

    Hi Ray;

    I looked on the HB site, but couldn't find any 643 nm lasers. Still, 800 mw of 643 is going to be a shitload brighter than 440 mw of 660! If I had to guess, I'd say you're looking at a 3 fold difference in apparent brightness (due to the eye's response), plus a 2 fold increase in actual power, so that's roughtly 6 times brighter. (You're talking *real* red there!)

    Then again, at nearly 1600 Euros, it ought to be pretty bright.

    Divergence and beam diameter is pretty decent for that much red. It would make one hell of a nice projector. You thinking about building a larger unit? (Don't forget that buying enough blue to go with all that red is going to be *astronomically* expensive.)

    Ok - got the spec sheet for those 643 nm lasers. Hmm... a 3mm diameter beam really isn't that bad. Maybe twice the beam diameter of my best laser. Then too, the divergence is listed as <1 mrad. I've seen DPSS blue lasers with <1.5, so that's really pretty good.

    Overall, I'm thinking that the beam quality is going to be pretty close to a Maxyz module pair. (Slightly worse than the Maxyz, but still close.) Certainly it will be a lot better than the beam from a half watt 635 nm diode... I think it will work for graphics. Your new scanners have 6 mm wide mirrors, right? The beam should fit with no problems.

    Only real drawback is the high price. (Well, not to mention the even higer price of a DPSS blue laser that could make enough power to balance all that red!)
