I gues more and better sleep could have a big affect on the BP. I have fairly low BP, but my sinuses are screwed and there is the ringing in the ears... I also sleep pretty good too, but I am a sleep addict. It is one of my favorite hobbies. So I do it often and I do it well.

I'm just the opposite... I think sleeping is a huge waste of time. I don't do it until I have to. That way, I get more time to work on my laser projects and type to friends at 11:00 at night.

My partner Terry has high blood pressure and he also has apnea and uses a CPAP. The doc explained to him that he had a very high red blood cell count because every night he was literally starving for oxygen. His system responded by making more red cells to carry what O2 could be had out of his lungs (which doesn't work very well). This messes with all kinds of stuff, like the liver, kidneys, heart, pancreas, veins, arteries, etc... He's been using it for so long now, he can't sleep without it. When he puts it on and lays his head down, it puts him to sleep!

Before the CPAP, he use to completely stop breathing. His chest would heave and he would kick with his legs and then he'd gasp a huge breath. It was awful.

They say the best "medicine" is to learn to deal with it
...at risk of sounding cynical, they only say that if they haven't got some expensive remedy to sell you...

One of my friends has tinnitus (Drum 'n Bass overdose over many years!) and he sometimes sleeps with headphones on, playing soothing music - don't know if it's 'new age' or not!

Exactly! No money in a cure, *treatments* are where its at! Read an article somewhere and it was calculated that(in the US at least) They spend about the same on research as they do on political endeavors. Don't really know how much stock I can put in that estimate, but it would not surprise me given that almost any new drug trial in this country costs billions which obviously guides the research avenues they would consider.

Goes a long way to explain why you can get Viagra through an insurance carrier, but not prescription glasses.

To your other statement: The new-age music is the blanket they use to cover the specialized white noise. The hippie shit is purported to therapeutic by "relaxing the user". I was obviously not in the original test group as I would have starting breaking things almost immediately.

You might have been joking, but in case you weren't, know that you're playing with fire if you think sleeping is a huge waste of time. It's not a waste by any means. We've evolved over the last 100,000 years or so to sleep for close to 12 hours per night. (When the sun went down, we slept!) It's only been in the last few hundred years that we've had the means to stay up all night on a regular basis. That's a few hundred years of technology trying to fight 100,000 years (or more) of evolution. Not gonna happen dude...

*All* mammals need sleep. And while we don't know exactly why, we do know that sleep deprivation causes all sorts of maladies, both physical and psychological. Also, sleep deprivation is cumulative. If you loose just 1 hour of sleep each night, at the end of the week your performance will be impaired to the same degree as if you had stayed awake for 24 hours straight!

Seriously, read the book "Sleep Thieves", by Stanley Coren. It will show you the dangers of sleep deprivation. Like most people, I always put sleep last on the list. But once I learned of the danger, I made sleep a higher priority. My performance at work and my mood at home has improved since I started getting more sleep.

Sleep apnea is just the tip of the iceberg. There are far more serious sleep disorders out there.

    Hi Adam,
Yes - I was joking. I definitely know about sleep deprivation. I spent many years getting 4-5 hours per night. Now I get 6-6.5 and things are a *lot* better. I know I need more, but with life in today's world, it's a little difficult at times!

This might sound pathetic... but I'm not sure how I am going to deal with SELEM! It starts at 10AM !!!

I stay up till 4AM, lay in bed for a couple of hours, finally fall asleep and then I can't get up.

I think the excitement of the whole event will perk me up though.

We need a new emoticon for being asleep at the keyboard. Kinda' like this but with both eyes closed.

I guess we could use this but that's too ambiguous.

    Hey Spec

I rang the hearing guy today. I think you've already been there... His miracle cure involves something to do with creating 'out of phase' noise at the same frequency as the tinnitus. He reckons your audiologist should be able to determine the frequency of the tinnitus. He says that the greatest success is when the tinnitus is also accompanied by some sort of hearing loss. Sadly, I don't think from what you've said that you're suffering a particular hearing loss so i'm not sure his 'cure' would be any good.

One other thing he mentioned was that there's a group of sufferers that have been taking Ginko Biloba long term and they reckon it's working for them to some degree. He cited one guy who had been taking it for 12 months as having been miraculously cured... Hmmm... It sounds a bit optimistic, but hey, you never know there might just be something in it.

Sorry I can't help you more. I was sort of hoping he'd really found something that may help you.
