User was perma-nuked for starting or replying to 7 threads with nothing other than marketing information.

Also changed their signature block to:

"HI! I AM A SPAMMER! DONT BUY MY SHIT!"

I have a zero tolerance policy on blatant spam. I also have an almost zero tolerance policy on occasional spam.

In short: You can plug your product if you want to in your signature or in an approved forum or as a direct reply to a thread where a user states interest in a product you offer but under no circumstances will I put up with asshattery.

This is not negotiable, and I reserve the rights to determine offensive content. IF you catch me on a bad day I will find signature blocks larger than 4 lines offensive and dont get me started on stupidly-large colorful fonts. Before you ask: No, A "Daddy is awake and pissed" warning system does not exist here.

Seriously: The belief that people here are just too stupid to know whether or not they want your product *really* causes me to see blood.

Yea, I have been unusually stressed out recently... Usually that leads to "progress" being made, but it now feels as if I am just playing catchup.

A couple odd medical issues cropped up recently that I believe are both causes of and made worse by this "high-strung" thing. Borderline Hypertensive Crisis(155/110) and Tinnitus. Oddly enough my resting pulse has always been fast but the doc's are certain that it greatly exacerbates these new found issues.

Sad part is I can mentally deal with exploding veins. Its the constant ringing in my head I cant get over which in turn just snowballs into more stress... Nasty catch 22.

On a side note: http://photonlexicon.com/index.php has been the recipient of a good solid backhand.

Hey Spec, Just out of interest... We employ a guy to provide a specialist hearing aid service at our optical branches. He's one of these types that's always well up on new technology. The other day he was raving about a new aid that was a miracle breakthrough for tinnitus sufferers.

Sadly I wasn't taking too much notice at the time as it wasn't particularly relevant to me and he was tending to ramble on. If you want I can ask him if it's real or was just in one of his dreams

I would be interested in any new information that anyone can bring to the table.

I assume he is talking about these new breed of "masking" devices they are coming out with? They seemed interesting until I found out they are just new-age music with a pink noise generator in the background. There are also cranial implants but those tend to be extremely dangerous. I think I am most bothered by the fact that I used to have phenomenal hearing. When I was a wee lad I could faintly hear bats click, that of course went away as I got older but my hearing was still phenomenal... I took a test the other day to figure out just how bad my hearing is now and found out I can't hear a fucking thing past 14Khz and there is a weak response 12-12.5Khz.

One of the "hard-core" sufferers of Tinnitus I read about in a med journal actually went ahead and got the destructive cochlear implants... his tonal response was shot and couldn't hear normal voices *before* the Tinnitus was entered into the equation... Crazy stuff.

The worst part about this is that almost *everything* is oto-toxic and can create or make this worse... even asprin in large doses... I started going through the pills I have here to check to see if anything was on the suspect list.

Funny thing happened... Doc *thought* it might be related to the blood pressure problem so he prescribed me Metprolol and Lasix to take care of that... It made the tinnitus audibly worse. They were on the "suspects" list.

I've spent the last week reading anatomy and bio-chemistry books trying to come up with something to help. No luck so far but I did learn that the method for the synaptic production of hearing in the brain is mechanical in nature, its pretty amazing. As the ciliated hairs in the cochlea get thrown around and bent due to vibration they physically open a spring like K+ gate which causes an electrical depolarization(Only place in the body where potassium is the depolarizing agent, its sodiums job everywhere else) that then floods the floor of the cilia with glutamate. The rest as they say, is history.

Tinnitus can be a really nasty thing. Its very prevalent in DJ's. I now use clubbing plugs for loud places as I've damaged my hearing slightly, of course its a bit late when you have tinnitus / hearing loss but can help prevent further damage.

At one time laser stimulation was suppsoed to be the thing but I think this was found out to be non beneficial. I've heard recently that the thing of the future is going to be some kind of gene therapy type thing to regrow the damaged hairs in the ear but I think thats a long way off.

Latest definite thing seems to be this procedure:

    But its still experimental.

I wasn't able to find any information on that treatment when I looked around however I did manage to find something similar for people who suffer from debilitating migraines and wondered if it would be similar...

The journal I read on that one basically stated that when the first migraine symptoms appear for the patient a FMRI can pick up a concussive retardation of activity starting in the occipital lobe that eventually expands out to the front of the brain at a rate of 2-3mm/minute... pretty freaking terrifying if you ask me.

I asked my friend Beth what order the symptoms came in while looking at a neuro-anatomy college textbook I have here and she basically stated the same progression where her vision ticks then gets progressively worse and eventually messes up her hearing...

I was curious if it ever messed up her smell to further elaborate on the FMRI confirmed progression and she stated that by the time it gets to her ears she is in no condition to be objective with her symptoms.

For what it's worth, my father had tinnitus too, and towards the end it got so bad that it would wake him up at night out of a sound sleep. We're pretty sure that for the last month of his life he was getting less than 2 hours of sleep per night because of this. The chronic sleep depravation combined with the constant ringing in the ears was enough to motivate him to take his own life. He was just 62.

Bottom line: tinnitus can be a lot more than just a little ringing in the ears. There's not a lot that can be done, but there are a few treatments that are showing limited sucess. Still, the best thing to do is to limit your exposure to loud sounds, especially when you're young, as this is the number 1 risk factor for developing tinnitus later in life.

Sorry to hear that you're suffering from it, Spec... Hopefully you can find relief in some of the treatment methods listed above. It's good that you're doing your own independent research too. Be *very* concerned, however, if it ever gets to the point where it wakes you up while you are asleep.

    Adam

PS: For those of you that have never heard what tinnitus sounds like, here is a brief audio file that shows you what a tinnitus sufferer hears ALL THE TIME. (Yeah, yeah, it's hotlinked from the live.love.hear blog. Sue me.)
