Question Bad for the diode ?

I saw this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw0qv...eature=related
which described how to mod a 5mw green laser to one a lot more powerful one but how long would the diode last after modding ? Should I spend £25 on a pointer to do this or spend it on something else (like a 100mw red module)?
    My friends say I'm mad , I suppose they're not wrong !

yeah thats not really the best idea...

its pretty much deregulating the power to the diode to an unstable high amount

You can crank up the potentiometer on most 532nm pointers and still have a decent lifespan. Most green pointers are more than capable of making 50mw+. This will decrease life expectancy however. I modded a couple of mine over 2 years ago and they still work fine to to this day. That resistor heating thing he proposes in the video is total BS. Their is no way your going to heat an SMD resistor to failure with a soldering iron. BTW, check out how he's holding his iron... LOL!

One aspect that does work however is adjusting the polarization of the laser diode with the KTP. You can rotate the diode in the case until you reach maximum output. Either way, I suggest you do a couple of hours of reading on LPF if you really want to mod your pointer.

    .
Holding the iron like that will surely lower the output of the laser!!!
You cant push that button for some time because you are in great pain..

    Red face Another error

Not only is he holding the tip of the soldering iron but what sort of numpty light a match on the carpet ?

So really my money would be better spend making my own pointer witha 100mw module ?

Maybe a silly question.... but why would you want to have a +100mW pointer?

Why not.... Pointers are cheap and easy to mod. A portable 100mW beam can be fun to play with. Kinda like a potato gun, no real use but fun.

put that 100mw pointer on the spudgun..... :-)

No really i don't see the fun in a 100mw pen sized pointer...
Maybe the fun is in gettin it to do 100mw..

but hey i'm not the tape burning type either....

    Not disrespecting anybody :-)
