Arrow my Lanta RGY 180 - do i have problems?

So its a pretty basic laser as u can guess but i'm no expert and i'm not sure if its running correct

so i wonder if u guys and gals can help me out - i broke my laser building virginity and opened up and took a few shots inside.

Firstly the red (150mW susposed) is really really poor, maybe i'm expecting too much - but when i took it apart i see the red diode is tiny!

is this right?? no wonder its so dull (i maybe wrong if something else is not set right)

the second matter i have problems with is that the display on the wall is often 'squiggly' i will put up some photo's to show you...

i get straight lines with horizontal and vertical single linear lines but when it makes a box or a cross its goes very funny - is this normal?

any more photos needed just holla (link to some more below)

    thanx in advance!

here is a link to the rest of the photos i took just incase u might want to see more....

Unhappy I think everything is running fine.

    Hi Rowie.
I've seen pictures you posted here
    http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/majorl...gust2008Photos

Me too had a "toy" like your Lanta RGY180. It is sold from another mark but the factory which it comes from is... identical (I recognized the same internal components and... the same calligraphy on the green head label also!).
    Well...
Looking at pictures and reading what you written, I can tell you that your device is working fine at 50%
You should have 100mw (in the best of the hypotheses) at 650nm coming out from the red diode.
Looking pictures it doesn't seem. Red spot is too much weak.
I think your red diode is damaged.

About boxes, circles, crosses etc. etc. now:
Scanner set is a "poor" 3-5K step motors. You should have galvos at least 20k speed for to obtain pretty figures.

If your device is still under warranty, you can contact the seller and ask him for to replace the red diode with a new one.

    Greetings.

its it just a standard 5.6mm diode? pressed into that module?

if so you could buy an long open can diode from a dvd burner and press it into the fitting and get yourself some more power.

    majorlee-

yes, to me it looks like you have some work ahead of you.

#1- i would check to see if your Red and Green lasers are aligned on the dichro. when both are on, they should perfectly overlap on the dichro. if they do not you will not get yellow.

#2- the scanners that are in there look HUUGE!!! the mirrors anyway. i dont know, perhaps its me and the way i am seeing them in the photographs. but if they are as big as they appear you will be lucky if you can get them up to 1k speeds!

#3- a 150mW Red diode (i think i read somewhere this was a 150mW 650 red) is going to be VERY dim compared to the green. 650nm is very hard on the eyes to see. unless you have a TON of fog, smoke or otrher scattering effects in the air.

if you wanted to get a little creative you can probably add in a 635 red, which would DRASTICALLY add some brightness. but to add in a laser and add in scanners you are already spending too much money in my opinion.

is this unit returnable? i really wish these pre-configured lower end lasers would just go away. i think (and this is just *MY* opinion!!!) that people purchase these expecting to get a "Laser Light Show Projector." just because a black metal box has a laser in it doesnt make it a "Laser Light Show Projector!" (majorlee...i am refering to the cheapo companies that make these! NOT you!! lol. dont want you to think i was putting YOU down!!)

and as we see time and time and time and time and time again, people are EXTREMELY dissatisfied!! and for just a little more money and just a little more research a unit can be made or purchased that is 1000's of times better.

I quote 200% what Marc said.
    It is the "tragical" reality.

thanks for the help here guys

its only a month or so old - but i bought from guy in the UK and i'm now in Germany - pants hey

so then i would be interested in a replacement diode if the part is faulty

the red really does seem very dim and has been the same since i have got it - not even a slight beam under heavy heavy smoke

i also do like the idea of using the part from a dvd burner, any links to threads explaining more about this guys?

also is there anything else i could check or do?

PS - i have another new 'toy' coming this week as well....

laserpointerforums has a lot of very good info on them. you can get a diode for about 24 bucks shipped thats easily capable of +200mw

youtube has some really great videos about how to make an DVD burner laser. You would atleast get the idea on how to do it.

btw i have to say you have some really TopNotch speakers there anyway. KRK. Pro stuff.

    good Luck.
