the japanese have had some sucess with guiding lightning strokes away from nuclear plants, but they use a 100 kW co2 beam, not exactly a taser fit.

SO have u heard the latest?

in the UK .... EVERY police officer is going to be issued with a Taser very soon?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1948...e-officer.html

and even traffic wardens are been given a new role/repsonibilites with powers like the police

    http://www.expressandstar.com/2008/0...affic-wardens/

The new legislation requires parking attendants to alter their title to civil enforcement officers but there will be no visible change to the uniforms, only the epaulettes on their shoulders will change to clearly state their role.
    something aint right here?

i'm bloody glad i moved out

dunno about you but if i had a choice i'd much prefer to be shot with a taser over a gun any day.

Given the choice I'd rather have a nice cup of tea and a sticky bun.

    What were the options again?

Tasers have been implicated in many deaths in the US where subjects are mentally ill, have a weak heart , or are under the influence of substances. However every time a coroner says "the taser did it", Taser sues the hell out of the coroners office. We just had a civil court over rule a coroner(almost unprecidented) here in a trial of a police office charged with abusing a mentally ill jail inmate using pepper spary and a taser after the jail nurse pumped him full of Adivan with a injection. The fact that over a quart of pepper spray was used on a confined inmate is disgusting. Taser argued that it was respatory distress that killed the inmate, not the shock that finished the job. Of course the local courts dropped the charges against all 4 cops involved but not yet tried, at the prosecuotr's request. Now the Feds are stepping in and will consider charging the cops with murder in Federal court, where a federal judge will not be swayed by bad science like wimpy local judge was. This is all nice and good, and can happen since the local prosecutors dropped the charges after the first officer was aquited, therefore double jeopardy will NOT apply to the remaining 4 cops. The main idiot will get off scot free, but his buddies and supervisor probably will not.

It is estimated that 300 people in the US loose their lives to taser every year, and we just had a 17 year old with a bad heart tasered and die nearby. That has turned into a major civil suit against Taser, although it was considered a justified action by local courts, as the youth was on pcp or similar at the time and posed a threat to the officer and others.

The moral of the story, if you have a weak heart, are too old, a abusive cop, or a drug problem, DONT GET TASERED.

There is a military laser system which acts just like you described, but it's huge and mounted on a truck. It's designed to target and destroy land mines using an insane HV burst of energy immediately following a laser discharge to create a plasma conduit.

I'm sorry, but I can't seem to locate the article.

I recently caught up with a friend of mine that’s moved out of IT into procurement for the NSW (Australian) Police force.

He said that he’s currently working on purchasing the tasers for our police and apparently part of the officers training to use the taser is to be on the receiving end, ouch!

This apparently makes the end user more aware of the pain so it won’t be used un-necessarily.

So, the question is, why don’t they do this with pepper spray or guns???
