Pangolin's file format is encrypted. It's one of the main things that keep folks like Mike Dunn (not to mention AVI) producing content for laser shows. Cracking that encryption would seriously threaten those companies. (It would also be illegal under the current DCMA law we have.)
Ah, but what of the laser show companies? Besides, the all-in-one file format you speak of already exists. It's called ILDA, and all the products you mentioned above support it. There are other reasons why companies choose to support their own, custom formats in addition to ILDA.Laser projector manufacturers would love to sell their equipment that is compatible with any current display files out there...
Well, James has already stated that his software is more of a frame editor than a show creation program.Just imagine the add " NOW SELLING WITH JAMES ALL IN ONE SOFTWARE AS STANDARD, FOR ALL YOUR LASER DISPLAY NEEDS"He'd have to add a lot of code to make it fulfill "all your laser display needs"...
Not everyone that challenges the norm is treated badly. The ones that get treated badly are the ones that behave badly to start with. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mehdi Ali (for you Amiga fans out there)... Sure, they may have had good ideas (well, except for Ali), but they were also complete jerks. Contrast that with Larry Page and Sergy Brin and you get the idea.
There are a couple other members here that are already working on this same idea. Perhaps you could organize them together and pool your efforts.
It *is* a laudable goal. I believe that the 3D Studio Max support in particular is the reason why Pangolin is so popular with professional companies. It makes it a lot easier to create a custom animated show. If you can get the same performance from an open-source project, more power to you.
