Always easy to say after the event, but I think someone on here posted the other day how they used their control software to reduce the laser power right down whilst they were working on the laser - in one of the galvo threads I think. Sounds like a sensible idea, work with a beam only barely visible. But like I said, its easy to be wise after the event and even then I suppose theres still room for control failure.

i've hit myself in the eye twice. first time with goggles on, but up over my head :\ about 300mw of 488nm. Noticed the spot for a day or so, then it went away.

Second time about 600mw of 650nm. That one lasted a few days, but again it's gone away. I noticed some really minor "funnies" on an amsler grid but i can't tell if they were there before or not.

Only way to tell if its permanent is with a retinal photograph which many opticians and hopsitals can do now.

As others have pointed out, the brain tends to compensate so without a scan its difficult to know if its healed or just been compensated for.

    Any news on you Andy?

I got nailed once right above the center of vision left eye and thought it was permanent, but as others have said, the brain compensates, and I dont notice anything anymore, but I do keep the power levels lower than i used to when adjusting/ experimenting.. I'm sure you're feeling kind of sick right now but keep a stiff upper lip and I can almost guarantee things will look better in a few days. Please keep us informed, Man. Take care, and take it easy.

Jesus, what you go and do that for, its so easy to drop the power down when aligning.

Also, a point before you all run out to buy protective goggles: Essencial but also tricky when aligning.

You put a pair of protectrive goggles and cant hardly see a beam to align so in the end you need to drop the power to a few mw to do the alignment.

The aim of the goggles is to not allow the light to pass to the eye, so how to that also gives you limited chance to align the beam.

The modulation tool to use is not a pc driven show controller but a regulated power supply to fix a 100% perfect voltage to the modulation that wont suddenly jump or spike if you get an email.

Don't want to say I told you so, but.....

They should have still looked and verified the problem, if any though. I'd look for a new opticians as you don't need one who has a well its your own fault attitude which this kind of smells of. There are a lot of good opticians out there. I recently went to a Specsavers for an eye test and mentioned my minor incident and she looked specifically for me.

As for your problems go to hospital. If you have a big hospital near you, they'll have a specific Eye Casualty Department that deals purely with eye injuries - mine does although mines a very big teaching hospital. If its a smaller hospital just go to general casualty and they'll take a look and then refer you to a specialist if needed.

If there is a problem Andy, the longer you leave it the less chance there is of them being able to do anything as once it starts healing it will start scarring without intervention. You may be unlucky and find there isn't anything that can be done anyway but you should try. Its interesting to note that in the Russian incident they said afterwards that those affected would have to have painful injections - this sounds like steroid injections into the eye to me although I'm not a doctor so wouldn't actually know beyond a layman's guess. But a little pain is worth it to save your sight.
